Squirrel Removal in Lafayette

Lafayette specifically

Squirrels are the most frequent attic call, and the twice-yearly pattern holds here as everywhere: late winter and late summer. On a slab house the attic is the only cavity available, which concentrates the damage.

Squirrels in Lafayette Parish: who does what

Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries is explicit that it does not remove nuisance wildlife. It permits individuals to do it for a fee. A Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator permit is issued to a person rather than a company, every individual doing the work must hold one in their own name, and getting it requires a Louisiana trapping licence, a basic hunting licence, and 80 per cent on the department's exam. The permit also lists exactly which animals may be taken, raccoon, squirrel, opossum, skunk, armadillo, beaver and nutria among them.

What Louisiana law says about squirrels

Squirrels are game animals in Louisiana (season from the first Saturday in October to the last day of February, plus a spring season in May). A nuisance squirrel may be live-trapped and relocated without a permit if the owner of the release property gives written permission and it is released within 12 hours. All Louisiana rules →

Signs, and why they matter

  • Fast, light scampering in the attic or wall: loudest at dawn and again before dusk
  • Scratching and persistent gnawing sounds
  • A neat, round hole chewed through fascia, trim or a gable vent
  • Chewed electrical wiring, which is a genuine and documented cause of house fires
  • Chewed plumbing lines and irrigation tubing

How removal works

One-way exclusion doors let squirrels leave and stop them returning, followed by sealing every gnawed opening with steel or hardware cloth. Wood alone gets chewed through again within weeks.

A one-way door lets the animal leave and not return, which is why sealing the hole is the last step, not the first.
