Squirrel Removal in Lafayette

Last reviewed September 8, 2026 against LDWF published rules and federal statute. How we research this site.

Squirrels are the most frequent attic invader in Lafayette and the one most likely to start a fire.

Lafayette specifically

Squirrels are the most frequent attic call, and the twice-yearly pattern holds here as everywhere: late winter and late summer. On a slab house the attic is the only cavity available, which concentrates the damage.

How you know it is squirrels

  • Fast, light scampering in the attic or wall: loudest at dawn and again before dusk
  • Scratching and persistent gnawing sounds
  • A neat, round hole chewed through fascia, trim or a gable vent
  • Shredded insulation, and nesting material in corners or soffits
  • Chewed wire insulation: check before it becomes an electrical fault

Why it matters

  • Chewed electrical wiring, which is a genuine and documented cause of house fires
  • Chewed plumbing lines and irrigation tubing
  • Ruined insulation and blocked soffit ventilation
  • A returning colony: squirrels are strongly site-loyal and will chew back in
Need this dealt with in Lafayette?

Somebody has to look at the property to answer that. How many entry points or burrows there are, how hard they are to get at, and whether young are present is what sets the price, and none of it can be judged from a description. How removal actually works

One-way exclusion doors let squirrels leave and stop them returning, followed by sealing every gnawed opening with steel or hardware cloth. Wood alone gets chewed through again within weeks.

Cut-away of a one-way exclusion door fitted over an entry hole A wall in cross-section with the attic on the left and outside on the right. A hinged flap is fitted over the entry hole on the outer face. An animal pushes the flap open from inside and leaves; the flap falls shut behind it, and a stop below prevents it opening inwards, so the animal cannot get back in. INSIDE — ATTIC OR CRAWLSPACE OUTSIDE WALL STOP — IT ONLY SWINGS OUT HINGED AT THE TOP OUT — ONE WAY AND NEVER BACK IN
The whole trade is in this one drawing. A one-way door lets whatever is up there leave on its own and shuts behind it — no cage, no relocation, nothing to come back to. It is also why sealing the hole is the last step: seal it first and you have shut the animal, and any young, inside your wall.

Timing

Two litters a year, typically late winter and again in late summer, so there are two seasons where young may be present and unable to leave.

What it costs

$300 – $550 typical

Removal is only part of it. Where an animal has been in an attic for a while, the contaminated insulation and droppings are usually the larger bill: what attic restoration involves →

What Louisiana law requires

Louisiana runs the most demanding regime of the states we cover. Every NWCO must carry a valid LDWF permit while working, and permits are issued to individuals only: each person doing the work needs one in their own name, so a company permit does not cover an unlicensed employee. Operators must be 18 or over, must hold both a valid Louisiana trapping licence and a valid Louisiana basic hunting licence while working, and must score at least 80 percent on the LDWF NWCO examination covering wildlife biology and behaviour, control methods, and the law. Permits run on a calendar year and must be renewed annually. Full Louisiana rules →

Squirrel questions

How much does Squirrel removal cost in Lafayette?

$300 – $550 typical. The spread comes down to how many entry points there are, how hard the roof or crawlspace is to reach, and whether young are present. Anyone quoting a firm price before seeing the property is guessing.

How quickly can someone come out?

Most squirrels calls in Lafayette are handled within a day or two. If an animal is loose inside your living space, or there is a bite or scratch involved, say so when you make contact; that changes the priority.

Can I just do it myself?

Sometimes, legally speaking. But the two things that go wrong are sealing an entry point while young are still inside, and handling an animal that turns out to be a rabies vector. Both are expensive mistakes, and one is dangerous.

Is there a wrong time of year for this?

Two litters a year, typically late winter and again in late summer, so there are two seasons where young may be present and unable to leave.
